Hey, Overthinker

If you've spent anytime with me you'd probably label me as introverted and quiet and you'd be correct. Maybe you only know me through social media. I've taught myself how to talk on a camera for Instagram, but it's not my natural tendency to do so. As introverted and quiet as I look on the outside my brain is LOUD. My brain goes a million miles an hour and often gets me into trouble with overthinking.

This past week I was starting to get stuck in an overthinking loop and it was making me anxious. The situation was potentially scary and I want to do everything to protect my kiddos, right!? But I had to literally make myself just pause and sit in my God's creation.

So, overthinker, I want to encourage you. First of all, I want you to know that you are not alone. Second, if your overthinking leads to anxiety I want you to know you don't have to be stuck. You get to choose what you think about. You have the ability to break the spiral that's happening in your mind.

"...that we would allow God to take up so much space in our thinking that our fears will shrink in comparison." Pg 16

"Because of Jesus, every fight has been ultimately won. Victory? It's already yours... If God us in us and is for us, then you and I can choose to fight from a place of victory. We can stand confident that God will prevail." Pg 67

I read this book Get Out of Your Head and I felt so seen. I have since been able to better handle my overthinking by acknowledging my thoughts, but not giving them so much power over me.

Here's a tip I use sometimes. Go for walk if you're able to and get the fresh air, but while your observing your surroundings start looking for certain colors. Force your brain out of its rut and think of something new. Look for all the colors of the rainbow, look at the details of the trees, listen to the sound of the wind. I can't be in nature for more than a few seconds when observing it's details without being reminded of my awesome Creator. If he puts so much detail into the plants around me, just imagine how much cares about the details of my life too. How comforting to know that the God of the universe hears me, my concerns, my overwhelming thoughts and He cares!

Psalm 139:4 NKJV

For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.

The God who cares and knows, he's called us to bring our thoughts into captivity of Himself. It takes time to train our brain, but we know God wouldn't ask something of us if we couldn't do it, and we can do it through his strength.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NKJV

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. [4] For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, [5] casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

So when you feel yourself slipping into the overthinking spiral or on the edge of an anxiety attack from the overwhelm I want you to remember the truths of Christ and take the steps to get out of your spiral. I know personally when you're in the middle of it, getting unstuck can feel SO hard and remembering truth in the middle can be even harder. That's why we have to train our brains now, dwell on truth now, prepare our hearts so when that spiral starts we are equipped and ready to face it head on.

I just got done listening to this this weeks episode from WHOA That's Good Podcast. It is LIFE giving and has so many helpful tips for working through overthinking, anxiety, and worry.
