It's easy to get into the daily rut of routine and just going about doing your thing. You go to church on Sunday and you say you know God, but there's no evidence. You'd say you want to raise your children to know God too, but there's zero action in your home to make Him known other than rushing to get to Sunday church... Here's a few things I've been checking in with in my own heart. I don't want to get stuck in the daily rut, so what am I doing?
Turn on worship music and sing praises to your God with your kids. Stop and pray. Pray with your kids- In the heat of disobedience when you told them not to do that one thing for the 10th time that day, stop and pray & discipline your children in the way of God's Word and teach them to listen and obey your voice so when it's time for them to listen and obey to God's voice they will obey Him and see Him as a good loving authority too.
Talk about God in your highs and lows. When you respond with much lack of patience, talk about how you were wrong and how God wants us to answer with a soft answer instead. (Prov 15:1). Teach forgiveness. Don't be so proud... you can ask your toddler for forgiveness when you're in the wrong. They might not understand it fully yet, but it's a good practice for your heart too.
Listen to God's word. I bought an app called Dwell where you can choose your Bible version & the voice you want to listen to read it. So it's not just a voice droning in the background. You can choose Bible reading plans that it will follow. Really glad this is something I added to our routine.
Lastly, this is something that's been really centering- look around at the world and people and realize(1) it's God's Creation (2) everyone is eternal. This isn't just about the here and now, acknowledge your God and see him in the everyday and that He's the beginning and end of it all.
Prayer is beautiful. It's not just words to make us feel better, it's our communication with God. Who says we can't talk to God like he's a friend sitting in our room or our car. It's not about being perfect, but God does call us to pursue holiness (1 Peter 1:15-16).
